What is DataCamp?

Overview of DataCamp

DataCamp is a popular online learning platform mostly focused on data science, analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence. It offers a variety of courses in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL, as well as more specialized tracks in ML, data manipulation, and visualization. The platform is designed to be super interactive, and features lots of hands-on coding exercises and projects to make the experience more engaging.

DataCamp’s Learning Approach

We are big fans of DataCamp’s approach to learning. Each course includes a combination of short video lectures and coding challenges that allow students to practice new skills immediately. This method reinforces learning and helps users retain information more effectively than traditional lecture-based courses. And personally, Elizabeth here, I was able to learn SQL basics in a couple days with this format– which is a lot more than I can say for some other courses.

DataCamp Courses and Specializations

Popular DataCamp Courses

Some of the most popular courses on DataCamp are their intro classes, including Introduction to Python, Introduction to R, and Introduction to SQL. These foundational courses are ideal for beginners. For more advanced learners (try at your own risk), courses like Machine Learning with Python and Data Visualization with R come highly recommended. While we can’t personally speak to those, a quick scrape of Reddit and user reviews show they’re great ways to boost your skillset.

Skill Tracks vs Career Tracks

DataCamp offers structured learning paths known as Skill Tracks and Career Tracks. Skill Tracks focus on very specific skills, such as a particular programming language, data manipulation or machine learning, and consist of a series of related courses. Career Tracks are more comprehensive and designed to prepare users for specific job roles, such as Data Scientist or Data Analyst. We personally recommend pursuing career tracks to increase your exposure to the various things that could light you up about a role. Learn about different types of analysts here.

Certifications Offered by DataCamp

Upon completing courses or tracks, DataCamp provides certificates that can be added to LinkedIn profiles or resumes. You know how we feel about certificates! We definitely recommend adding these to your resume upon completion. Learn more about our recommended process for including certifications on your resume here

DataCamp Pricing and Subscription Plans

Standard Plan vs Premium Plan

DataCamp’s individual plan costs about $25 per month when billed annually, though they do run lots of promotions. At my time of researching, they’re running a 50% off promo– so be aware if you have the time! Their plan includes access to all courses, skill tracks, and career tracks. The premium plan, which costs about $33 per month when billed annually, offers additional features such as access to projects, priority support, and unlimited skill assessments.

Free Courses on DataCamp

DataCamp also offers a selection of free courses. These introductory courses cover the basics of Python, R, and SQL, providing a taste of the platform’s interactive learning style. We recommend trying this out before paying for a course to see if the style is right for you.

Other Discounts and Special Offers

DataCamp frequently offers discounts and special promotions, especially around holidays and during back-to-school seasons. It’s worth checking the website regularly for these deals. Right now they’re running a 50% off summer promo!

DataCamp vs Codecademy: A Comprehensive Comparison

Course Offerings

It’s no secret DataCamp’s biggest competitor is Codecademy. They’re both formitable opponents, but there are ways to choose the right one for you. While DataCamp focuses primarily on data science and analytics, Codecademy offers a broader range of programming courses, including web development and computer science. For those specifically interested in data science (including machine learning and AI, which we know a lot of you are!), DataCamp provides a more targeted and specific learning experience.

Learning Experience

Both platforms use an interactive learning model. However, DataCamp’s approach is more hands-on with immediate coding practice integrated into the lessons, making it highly effective for mastering data science concepts.

Pricing and Value

DataCamp’s pricing is competitive, especially for those committed to pursuing a career in data science which can be a super lucrative career. Codecademy offers both free and paid plans (usually starting $15/month), with its Pro ($20/month) membership providing access to more advanced content and projects.

User Reviews and Feedback on DataCamp

Positive Feedback

We love to scrape as many Reddit and web reviews as possible to find pros and cons so you don’t have to. There aren’t too many surprises here– users often praise DataCamp for its interactive courses, real-world examples, and beginner-friendly approach. The platform’s immediate feedback on coding exercise performance is a favorite feature, which helps learners understand and correct mistakes in real-time (I loved this too!).

Common Criticisms

Some users feel that DataCamp’s courses do not go as in-depth as other platforms, such as Coursera or edX, which partner with universities for more rigorous academic content. We personally recommend these courses instead because having a university name behind a certificate adds credibility. Additionally, while DataCamp’s exercises are practical, they may not cover the theoretical aspects of data science as thoroughly.

Expert Opinions

Experts in the field (other teachers, seasoned engineers) note DataCamp’s focus on practical skills and its ability to get beginners up to speed quickly. However, it’s important to call out they often recommend supplementing DataCamp’s courses with more advanced studies or practical experience to achieve a deeper understanding.

Is DataCamp Worth It? Pros and Cons
